- Chairman of the National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee Prime Minister General Thein Sein who is supervising relief tasks for storm victims in a speedy and effective way in Ayeyawady Division presented 20 sets of TV, 10 DVD players and 10 satellite receivers to Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Kyaw Swe for the storm victims at various camps enabling them to enjoy the programmes at Mya E-ya Hall of the South-West Command this morning. Upon arrival at Pathein Air Base, the Prime Minister and party inspected Tatmadawmen loading relief supplies for the storm victims to Tatmadaw Aircraft, and unloading of bags of gram, vermicelli, bottled drinking water, refreshments, medicines and construction materials from trucks. Next, the Prime Minister and party assisted loading of supplies onto the helicopters.

Afterwards, they encouraged Tatmadawmen, policemen, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross Society who were unloading relief supplies from Tatmadaw Y.8 Cargo Aircraft and loading onto the trucks at Pathein Air Base. Afterwards, the Prime Minister and party looked into losses and damages in the villages of Ngaputaw by helicopter. Upon arrival at Hainggyikyun, they oversaw arrival and stockpile of relief supplies to be provided to the storm victims at Hainggyikyun Basic Education High School. Next, the Prime Minister met with local people and consoled them. Afterwards, they inspected affected wards in Hainggyikyun town by helicopter and cordially met with the local people and encouraged them.

After inspecting the quality of rice and edible oil, they viewed distribution of rice and edible oil to the storm victims. The storm victims from three wards of Hainggyikyun were provided with rice and edible oil. Relief supplies were systematically distributed to the local people at Panmawady Naval Region Command. At Panmawady Guest Hall, Commodore Myo Myint Than of Panmawady Naval Region Command briefed the Prime Minister on damaged houses in three wards and 22 of village/tracts of Hainggyikyun, arrival of relief supplies and distribution of relief supplies to the local people. After hearing the reports, the Prime Minister fulfilled the requirements.

On their way back to Pathein, the Prime Minister and party airdropped instant foodstuffs and bottled drinking water to urgently- needed villages from the helicopter due to difficulty in landing. Under the supervision of the National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee, Brig-Gen Kyaw Swe, Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command, flew to coastal areas of Chaungwa, Thakkaethaung, Hteiksun, Didugon and villages in Pyinkhayaing by helicopter and comforted storm victims and handed over foods, drinking water and medicines to them. A helicopter dropped packages of food and drinking water to some areas where the helicopter could not land.

Afterwards, Prime Minister General Thein Sein, ccompanied by Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung and Commander Brig-Gen Kyaw Swe, flew to Pyapon from Pathein by helicopter. The chairmen of Pyapon district and township Peace and Development Councils reported to the Prime Minister on damages in Pyapon and villages near the town, establishment of relief centres and collection of relief aids. After hearing reports, Prime Minister General Thein Sein fulfilled the requirements and handed over food carried by the helicopter. Afterwards, the Prime Minister and party viewed damages in the town. During the tour, they also visited Pyapon Hospital. Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Daw Thi Thi Win reported on providing medical treatment to storm victims and requirement of medicines. The Prime Minister comforted the patients receiving treatment at the hospital and instructed the officials concerned to send emergency patients to Yangon. Food, drinking water, medicine and clothes were airlifted to Pyapon this morning. The Prime Minister and party proceeded to Kyaiklatt and inspected damages in the town.

During the inspection tour, Prime Minister General Thein Sein urged officials concerned to make efforts for creating hygienic conditions and providing medical care to the victims at relief centres in the town. He also handed over foods airlifted by the helicopter to officials concerned. Foods, clothes and drinking water were also airlifted to Kyaiklat this morning. Afterwards, the Prime Minister and party flew to Dedaye and gave instructions to officials concerned on providing health care to victims at the relief centre and matters on drinking water. He also made arrangements for providing rice and food to the victims in Dedaye, and handed over food to officials concerned.Food, medicines, clothes and drinking water were airlifted to Dedaye this morning. - The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries held the coordination meeting on meat and fish sector at the hall of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation on Bayintnaung Road in Insein Township, here, yesterday, with an opening address by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein. The presidents of Myanmar Fisheries Federation and the Myanmar Livestock Breeding Federation reported on arrangements for production and distribution of meat and fish and responsible persons of Myanmar Fish Breeding Association, Myanmar Marine Products Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Offshore Trawlers Association and Myanmar Crab and Eel Association on their respective sectors. Departmental heads of Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries, Fisheries Department and Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Enterprise submitted reports on arrangements being made for sales of meat and fish to storm-hit victims at reasonable prices and future plans. The minister gave necessary instructions.

Yesterday afternoon, the Myanmar Investment Commission met entrepreneurs at the hall of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development on Bogyoke Aung San Street, here. Chairman of the MIC Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein explained relief and rehabilitation activities for storm-hit victims in Ayeyawady and Yangon divisions. MIC member Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Tin Naing Thein and Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein also explained arrangements for providing relief items to the storm-hit victims in Ayeyawady and Yangon divisions.

Officials accepted relief items worth K 300 million for the storm-hit victims donated by U Aik Tun; K 500 million for reconstruction tasks in Kungyangon Township by U Tun Myint Naing; K 100 million for Kungyangon Township and 300,000 corrugated iron sheets to be sold as one CI sheet per K 4,000 in three townships of Ayeyawady Division by U Chit Khaing; 200,000 CI sheets to be sold as one CI sheet per K 4,000 in two townships in Ayeyawady Division and 10,000 250-gm packets of edible oil; rice bags worth K 50 million by U Ko Ko Htwe; and 100,000 drips by Dr Zaw Tun who is also providing medical care storm-hit patients at Shwegondaing Specialist Clinic. In addition, Eden Co plans to remove the fallen trees and debris on University Avenue; Dagon International Co on Pyay Road (between Kyongyi Street and Hledan Junction); Shwedaung Co on Pyay Road (between Hledan Junction and 8th- Mile Junction); Asia World Co on Pyay (between 8th- Mile and Thamaing Junctions); and Shwe Than Lwin Co on Strand Road (along Lower Pazundaung Street).

- Chairman of National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee Prime Minister General Thein Sein, who was supervising the relief measures for storm victims in Ayeyawady Division based in Pathein, inspected loading of relief supplies onto the ships for the victims in cyclonic storm Nargis-stricken areas in Ayeyawady Division yesterday.

In the evening, the Prime Minister visited the relief camps and the people's hospital, consoled and provided the victims with relief supplies. At 8.45 am, the Prime Minister presented 25 WCDMA telephones to Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Kyaw Swe for ensuring smooth communications in relief and resettlement at Mya E-ya Yeiktha in Pathein.

The Prime Minister and party inspected unloading of corrugated iron sheets from the vehicles for relief camps at Pangyan Jetty on Strand Road in Pathein. They went to U Cho Rice Mill in Kungyan Ward where Daw Aye Aye Lwin, the rice mill proprietor, reported on arrangements for transport of 2,700 bags of rice out of 20,000 to the relief camps in Hainggyi Island. The Prime Minister inspected loading of the bags of rice onto the ships, rice milling and storage of rice and unloading of rice by the Tatmadaw members. Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Rice Millers Association U Myo Wai and Township Rice Millers Association donated 1,500 bags of rice to the relief camps in the division.

In the evening, the Prime Minister, Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung and party went to No 3 Basic Education High School and consoled 89 victims from two villages from Labutta Township and eight villages from Ngaputaw Township and provided them with food, clothing and utensils. Members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, social organizations and wellwishers donated food, clothing and utensils. The Prime Minister met the wellwishers from No 6 and 7 Wards who cooked meal for the victims. The Prime Minister and party went to General Hospital (Pathein) and asked after health of 45 injured patients and four outpatients.

The Prime Minister presented medicines for the patients to Medical Superintendent Dr U Soe Naing. He visited the injured victims and provided them with food and other supplies. Next, members of USDA and social organizations donated food and supplies. In the morning, Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung and Minister for Transport Maj- Gen Thein Swe went to Eyar, Kadonkani, Kyeingyoung and Amar Villages by helicopter. They carried out relief measures and provided instant food,drinking water, medicines and clothing.

They proceeded to Hlaingphone, Kathahmyin, Mainmahla Island and Kyunnyogyikyun villages and provided food and drinking water to the victims. A helicopter dropped instant food and drinking water to the areas where the helicopter could not land. The commander and Minister for Cooperatives Maj-Gen Tin Htut went to Labutta by helicoper. Accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo, they went to Theikpan gongyi and Kwinpauk regions and provided instant food, drinking water, medicines and clothing. Twelves patients are giving treatment at General Hospital in Pathein. The commander and the minister provided drinking water and food to the victims in Labutta, Thingangyi and Saluseik regions. - Chairman of the National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee Prime Minister General Thein Sein consoled the victims at the relief camps in Kungyangon and Kyauktan townships, and attended to the needs this afternoon. The Prime Minister, accompanied by Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence, ministers and departmental officials, left Yangon by air at 2 pm today and inspected the damages of the houses and buildings and flooded paddy fields in Kungyangon Township, by helicopter. Upon arrival at Kungyangon, the Prime Minister heard a report by Chairman U Kyaw Win of the Township Peace and Development Council on loss of houses and buildings in storm-hit rural and urban areas and health care services being provided to the victims at 22 relief camps. Col Than Naing Oo of No 77 LID gave a supplementary report. In response to the report, the Prime Minister gave instructions on the works.

The Prime Minister comforted the victims from urban and rural areas at the relief camp in No 2 Basic Education High School. He expressed thanks to the health care team led by Lt-Col Myat Khaing of the Directorate of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence and specialists from Asia Tawwin Specialist Clinic for giving treatment to the monks and people at the relief camp. In meeting with the victims at Swan-in Myitta three-storey monastery, the Prime Minister consoled the victims, saying that they have to show resilience to overcome the aftershocks of the natural disaster. He accepted 1800 bags of rice, 8000 CI sheets and medicines donated by U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World Co and 1000 blankets by Managing Director U Kyaw Kyaw Soe of New Comet Trading Co Ltd.

The Prime Minister by car inspected the conditions of Kungyangon that was hit by the strong wind.The Prime Minister from helicopter inspected the conditions of Letkhokkon Village that is adjacent to the sea. On arrival at Kyauktan Township, the Prime Minister heard a report by Township PDC Chairman U Maung Maung Khin, on the relief camps, caring of the victims and health care.After asking some questions for further information, the Prime Minister fulfilled the requirements. He inspected ravaged buildings by car, and meals for the victims at the relief camp in Myoma BEMS in Kyauktan. He fomforted the victims. At the relief camp in Shwe Hmaw Wun Sasana Beikman monastery, the Prime Minister consoled the victims and instructed responsible persons to keep the relief camps clean, and presented instant noodle packages and purified drinking water to them. - MNA

- The National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee held the coordination meeting at the hall of Yangon Command Headquarters, here, this morning, attended by Chairman of the NDPCC Prime Minister General Thein Sein. In his speech, Prime Minister General Thein Sein said that as cyclonic storm ‘Nargis' hit at some places in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions on 2 and 3 May, the relief work commenced on 4 May. The government formed the National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee and 10 sub-committees to see that those who remained alive would survive.

Now, the stability prevails at the storm-hit areas. The Prime Minister said that he went on inspection tours and observed the objective conditions, and he immediately provided necessary assistance for the storm-hit regions and made arrangements for the future plans. In addition, officials carried out effective relief work using Tatmadaw helicopters to distribute instant foods, essential items and drinking water to some storm-hit areas. He continued to say that relief camps are temporarily opened in the storm-hit townships. He stressed the need to accommodate the victims at the safe places of neighbouring townships for enabling them to have potable water and hygienic food. He said that arrangements are being made to provide construction materials for reconstruction of the damaged buildings before the rainy season. He noted that some construction entrepreneurs have offered help for the construction of the buildings. Thus, it is necessary to coordinate with them. In addition, he stressed the need to send more medicines to forward camps and hospitals and medical teams to provide effective treatments to the victim patients as soon as possible.

Moreover, he said that it is necessary to announce the telephone numbers and donation centres for enabling the wellwishers from various parts of the country to donate cash and kind to the victims. He instructed officials to join hands with the storm victims to correctly and speedily update the lists of the damage and loss, dead and missing. In conclusion, the Prime Minister urged not only officials but also all the people to assist the victims with goodwill. Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence reported on relief and rehabilitation tasks, preparations for providing health care services to the storm victims, donations of water purifiers and tablets by wellwishers and arrangements for providing money, heavy machinery and expertise of national entrepreneurs in reconstruction of stormhit townships and villages. Chairmen and officials of subcommittees submitted the reports on work done in their respective sectors and future tasks. Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win reported to the Prime Minister on resumption of local trains and bus lines as usual, sales of fuel for vehicles, rerunning of factories at Hlinethaya Industrial Zone after electricity supply, opening of rice shops, daily providing of rice and aids to relief camps and arrangements for reconstruction of schools, hospitals and dispensaries. Those present took part in the discussions. After attending to the needs, the Prime Minister urged officials of the committees to join hands in the tasks to assist the victim citizens as the relatives. - Foreign countries are providing relief supplies to cyclonic storm Nargis-hit areas in Myanmar.TG-303 plane from Singapore carrying 160,000 tablets and 36 boxes of chocolate arrived here at 8.45 am; Air Bus-300 from Italy carrying mosquito nets, tarpaulin tents, water containers, plastic, medicines and foodstuff worth US$ 300,000 at 10 am; Mandarin plane from China (Taipei) carrying three tons of bottled drinking water, biscuit and noodle packages at 11.17 am; C- 130 plane from Bangladesh carrying 9.5 tons of medicines, tablets, tarpaulin tents, plastic, potato, longyi and biscuit at 2.15 pm; Illusation plane from India carrying relief supplies at 2.30 pm and C-130 plane from Thailand carrying 15 tons of bottled drinking water, candles, hammers and dried noodles at 2.50 pm. Planes carrying relief supplies from foreign countries will continue to arrive in Yangon the next days. Planes and vessels carrying relief supplies from foreign countries arrived continuously in Myanmar. Item-accepting teams systematically accepted relief supplies at the jetties and airports and immediately distributed them to the disaster-hit areas by air, water and road without delay. - MNA

- Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected storm-hit areas in Kawhmu and Kungyangon in Yangon Division from 4 to 6 May. He supervised distribution of relief aids to the storm victims and fulfilled the needs for the relief and resettlement works. The Minister provided storm victims in Kawhmu with foodstuff and bottled drinking water on 7 May. Next, he met with officials, townselders and responsible persons of storm-hit wards and villages at the relief camp in Kungyangon and coordinated with them reconstruction works and providing of foodstuff and drinking water.The Minister had a discussion about health care service with Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint and Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo who were also there. Afterwards,Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi and Minister Dr Kyaw Myint looked into unloading of noodle packings, drinking water bottles and tarpaulins donated by Asia World Company. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi comforted the storm victims and responsible persons of Asia World Company donated relief aids to them.He met with officials and responsible persons of storm-hit areas in Dedaye, Ayeyawady Division, and coordinated with them relief and reconstruction works and providing of foodstuff and donated bags of rice to the storm victims. Next, he met with storm victims at the relief camp and attended to the requirements. He looked into health care service being given to the storm victims at emergency clinic in Kungyangon and comforted the patients. It is learnt that health care service is being provided by doctors and health staff led by Physician Dr U Kyaw Zin Thant and Dr U Khin Maung Swe free of charge. It is learnt that foodstuff, drinking water, medicines, clothes and other personal goods are being provided to storm victims in Kawhmu, Kungyangon, Dedaye by the State and wellwishers and plans are being made to reconstruct damaged schools, hospitals, monasteries, government office buildings and houses as quickly as possible. Accompanied by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha and Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Lt-Gen Myint Swe left for Twantay by helicopter, carrying relief aid for the victims. He supervised unloading of the relief items onto vehicles. While in Twantay, Lt-Gen Myint Swe inspected provision of health care services to the victims at the relief camps and presented food and medicines to them. On arrival at Kawhmu, they were welcomed by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi. At the relief camps, they consoled the victims and provided food and medicines.At Latkhokkon Model Village of Kungyangon Township, they comforted the storm victims at the relief camp of Latkhokkon BEHS and presented relief supplies to them. - Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Thu met the US Charge d'Affaires Ms Shari Villarosa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yangon at 17:00 hours on 9 May 2008 and explained Myanmar's principles in receiving disaster relief assistance for the people affected by the cyclone Nargis. During the meeting, the Deputy Minister recalled that on 5 May 2008, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and the Minister for Information met the diplomatic corps at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yangon and briefed them on the impact of cyclone Nargis and the disaster situation in the cyclone-striken areas. At that briefing, it was made clear that Myanmar would be pleased to receive from any country and agency, disaster relief supplies such as tents, plastic sheets, corrugated iron sheets, food and medicines, blankets, clothings, communication equipment. The Deputy Minister added that however rumours were spreading that the Myanmar Government was making selective acceptance of donations and was declining disaster assistance from certain western countries. In fact, disaster relief assistance donated by countries near and far, has been accepted by the authorities concerned and systematically transferred to disaster-striken areas with immediate effect. He also said that financial assistance from any country could be provided through the respective Myanmar Missions while disaster relief goods could be brought in to Yangon International Airport or Yangon International Seaport where they would be received by the authorities concerned for immediate transfer and distribution to the affected people in the disaster-striken areas. The US Charge d' Affaires then handed over a note to the Deputy Minister offering relief supplies to be delivered in the coming days from the US Government. The Myanmar side has already replied its acceptance of the offer for assistance with thanks. The Government of the Union of Myanmar, in accordance with its prevailing principles, has not refused but accepted with appreciation the offer of disaster relief goods and financial assistance from any government or agency. - MNA

 

Adjutant-General, Commander supervise relief tasks in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 9 May

- Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung of the Ministry of Defence, ccompanied by Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Kyaw Swe, supervised loading of relief supplies onto helicopters for storm victims at Pathein Airport yesterday morning. They inspected storm-hit areas of Pyapon and Dedaye townships and Thandeik village by helicopter. After inspecting damages and losses of Dedaye Township, they met departmental officials at the office of the Township PDC. Major Myo Htut Aung of the local battalion and officials reported on loss and damages due to the storm and opening of relief camps. The Adjutant-General comforted the victims at the relief camp opened at the prayer hall of Kyaikdeyon Pagoda and presented relief supplies to them. The Adjutant-General and the commander viewed distribution of bags of rice and cash assistance donated by hammadushin Hsekinda to the victims at the relief camp in the precinct of Tilawkamarazein Pagoda.

In Kyaiklat, the Adjutant-General gave instructions to departmental personnel. In Pyapon, the chairman of the Township PDC and Head of Ayeyawady Division Police Force Police Col Thura Tin Hla reported to the Adjutant-General and the commander on performing of relief task. While in Pyapon, they met Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Soe Naing, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Thein Aung, who were supervising the relief tasks. In meeting with departmental officials at the office of Bogale Township MCWA, the chairman of the Township PDC reported to the Adjutant-General and the commander on damages and losses in the township and opening of relief camps, Minister Brig-Gen Thein Aung and officials on performing of relief tasks, clearing of debris and supply of water. Later, the Adjutant-General left necessary instructions. - MNA
