Press Release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar had released a statement on 12 July 2007, explicitly opposing the Taiwan authorities' move for a referendum on joining the United Nations. The Myanmar delegation also voiced its full support to the People's Republic of China in rejecting the proposed inclusion of supplementary item called "The Question of representation of Taiwan" in the agenda of the 62 nd session of the UN General Assembly.

It has once again come to the Ministry's attention that despite widespread opposition by the international community, the Taiwan authorities have announced on 1 February 2008, that they will hold the referendum on UN membership on 22 March 2008 at the same time with the election of leaders in Taiwan. As a close and friendly neighbour of the People's Republic of China, Myanmar consistently adheres to the "One China Policy" and always regards Taiwan as an integral part of the People's Republic of China.

Myanmar is concerned at the undesirable escalation in cross-Strait tensions that could stem from Taiwan's continued push for the referendum as it could effect the peace and stability of the region. The Government of the Union of Myanmar therefore reiterates its categorical opposition to the Taiwan authorities' any move for "Taiwan Independence" including the attempt to hold the referendum on joining the United Nations.
