Population and the People
The Union of Myanmar is made up of 135 national races of which the main national races are Bamar, Chin, Kachin, Shan, Kayah, Kayin, Mon and Rakhine. The population of the country is estimated 55.4 million in 2006 and the population growth rate is 1.84% in 1998-99, male population was 27.51 million or 49.66% and the female was 27.88 million or 50.34%. The Bamar represents majority race and made up about 70% of the population.
